This is Niels Eikelboom playing An Malvina by Johann Kaspar Mertz. Niels came to Amsterdam because he wanted to compare his cedar guitar with a spruce top model. After a detailed comparison he concluded that each model has its quality. He decided to keep the cedar and to add a spruce to his collection as well.
This is Stefan Gerritsen. He is a left-handed guitar player and member of Verso, a very nice and successful duo with an unusual line up: pan flute and guitar. Some people think that left handed players play a ‘normal’ guitar, holding it the other way round. That is not the case. The bracing of a guitar with a bass and a treble part, the thickness of the top and the placing of the bridge are different. A left handed guitar is more or less built ‘the other way round’.
This is Eline Hofstra. She is a student at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag where she studies with Enno Voorhorst. I know she plays beautifully because every now and then she comes to our house to try out a new program or to rehearse for competitions. I have known her since she was a little girl and I have seen her growing up into this charming young lady. This picture was taken last Summer when she came by to have her guitar repolished. At the end of the month she will celebrate her 21st birthday!
This is Kuang Junhong. He is twelve years old and dropped by with his teacher Xu Bao, head of the Guitar Department of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu. They were on their way home after having visited Guitar Symposium Iserlohn. Kuang Junhong had taken part in the competition were he became fourth. For the best interpretation of Spanish music he won the First Prize.
Chia Wei Lin visited me in my workshop last month. He is a very promising young guitarist from Taiwan, now studying with Hubert Käppel at the Musikhochschule in Cologne. I met him for the first time when he was still a little boy. I was very impressed by his playing. I had all reasons to as you can see in the video in which he is 12 years old.
This is Ruben Silva Kas, thirteen years old. Last month he won the second prize of the Princes Christina Junior Competition and after that he came to the workshop with his father to buy a new guitar. He is very happy with it and recorded a couple of video’s with it. Ruben is a student of Lydia Kennedy at the Academie Muzikaal Talent
This is Alfredo Huang, a Taiwanese guitarist who I met years ago, during my first visit to Taiwan. He is a very active player who works as a soloist as well as an accompanist, mainly of the Korean soprano Ko Suk-Kyung, his wife and former fellow student at the Real Conservatorio de Madrid.
Besides as a performer, Alfredo is also very much appreciated as a professor. He regularly shows videos of his students on the internet like this, of a guitar quartet of which all members are playing my instruments.
Taking part means uploading video’s on youtube.
Here his beautiful interpretation of Barrios’ Mazurka Appasionata which brought him there.
